#1 Salt free water softener system. The best hard water reduction.

The FilterSmart Salt Free Water Softener Requires No Maintenance, Wastes No Water, & Saves You Money Guaranteed!  Finally Put An End To Hard Water Today!.

Traditional salt based systems use salt which adds sodium to the water supply. The salt free softener is the ideal way to treat hard water without the damaging effect of added sodium.

No Maintenance!

Never carry heavy bags of salt again! Changing out the sediment pre filter every 8-10 months is the only maintenance required. FilterSmart up-flow systems require no electricity to drain or salt replacements.

Benefits of Salt Free Water Softening

  • Uses no salt or potassium
  • Wastes no water or electricity
  • Virtually maintenance free
  • Reduces lime scale formation on pipes, faucets, shower heads
  • Extended’s the life of your appliances
  • Healthy & environmentally friendly
  • TAC found effective at scale reduction.
the process
The process of our salt free softener

The process our salt free water softener media use is TAC or template assisted crystallization.  The process takes hard water (calcium and magnesium) and transforms the ions into microscopic nano crystals. This suspends the particles so that it cannot “stick” or cause scale while the water travels through. FilterSmart Salt Free Softener does not add anything or remove anything from the water, retaining the important naturally occurring minerals, especially calcium and magnesium.

Salt-using softeners must be regularly recharged by adding more salt and back-flushing with fresh water, which is costly, inconvenient, corrosive to pipes and water heaters, harmful to the environment and wasteful of a precious resource.

Industry Best

TAC salt free water softener media has been found to be effective in preventing limescale.  Unlike salt-based softeners, FilterSmart Salt Free Water Softener won’t demineralize your water by chemically removing minerals replaced by sodium nor will it put excess salt waste or chemicals into our environment. All this while protecting your home's plumbing, extending the life of your washing machine, water heater, dishwasher and other appliances.

Sediment Pre Filter Kit

All our water systems at FilterSmart come with a pre filter housing and mounting bracket to be installed prior to the water softener. The sediment pre filter removes any fine sediment, silt or debris that is in the water.

The filter is recommended to be changed every 8-10 months and is easy to do for any homeowner.

Salt Free Water Softener -FS500

In cold water, calcium ions (Ca2+), magnesium ions (Mg+2) and bicarbonate ions (HCO3-) are surrounded by “layers” of electrochemically-attracted water molecules, which “insulate” against the natural tendency of the oppositely-charged ions to come together and form crystals.

Atomic level templates on the surface of the media act as catalysts and reduce the ability of water molecules to prevent calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate ions from coming together to form crystals of calcium and magnesium scale. This process that we refer to as Template Assisted Crystallization (TAC) results in the creation of microscopic crystals of scale (seed crystals), which rapidly form in the treated water, not on the contact surfaces of the water system, and are carried downstream in colloidal suspension through the water system.

    Well water

On a well here in Idaho. Was hoping to get a salt free system for my home. There are some restrictions on well water with this system like not having iron, hydrogen sulphide in your water otherwise it can become less effective.

Apparently all salt free media is the same so be cautious what others will tell you. The rep was upfront and honest which was good. We got the water tested and didn't have anything mentioned above. It has been working pretty good for us so far. I would like to give it some more time to see for sure.

    Quality Water System

The salt free softener is just what we wanted. We were tired of buying salt so the salt free one was looking quite intriguing. After months of research it looked like the medium was legitimate from testing that i have seen. You just have to understand it is different from Ion exchange systems that adds salt. For scale from hard water it will certainly keep the pipes and faucets free. That silky slimy feel from softeners, you won't get from salt free. But i never liked that anyhow, so salt free water the one for me.

    Eco friendly solution

I like to think of myself as someone that likes to "go green" whenever they can. After needing a new system for my home i was pleasantly surprised to see a salt free green solution to water softeners. I am happy to admit it was a good choice. I can't believe we used to use those old water softeners like we used to destroying the environment. Can't imagine why anyone would want to go with the old salt based systems.

FILTERSMART FAQs

  1. How large are the tanks?

Our 1-4 Bath 12 GPM systems use 9 x 48 inch tanks and sit about 52 inches tall with the valve head. The 4+ 15 GPM system use 10x54” tanks and sit about 58 inches tall.

  2. What is hard water?

Hard water is the amount of dissolved minerals usually calcium and magnesium that is in the water, commonly measured in grains per gallon. Hard water is mostly a nuisance as these dissolved minerals can clump together to produce scale, which can harm your internal pipes, plumbing, and home appliances.

  3. Is hard water bad for you?

No. calcium and magnesium are natural occurring minerals and is generally considered to be a benefit to a healthy diet. However these minerals are a nuisance for internal plumbing, appliances, shower or faucet heads and heating elements.

  4. Why do I need to filter the water?

Chlorine is added to local municipalities(city water) as a disinfectant. It is generally responsible for dry skin, and poor taste and odor. Chlorine can create disinfectant by products which also has been known to cause health issues. Activated carbon is the best known way to remove choline and by products as well as most all other chemical compounds that can find their way into local water supply.

  5. What is the difference between a salt and salt free softener system?

Salt water softeners use ion exchange to add sodium (salt) to replace the calcium and magnesium ions in the water. The result is the depletion of calcium and magnesium and a higher level of sodium in the water. Water softeners also waste water through backwashing and require a drain and electrical hookup. Water softeners do not filter contaminants from the water but simply exchange the calcium and magnesium with sodium thus producing soft water. Salt free systems act as a conditioner taking the calcium and magnesium and turning them into microscopic nano crystals that become suspended and cannot attach and create scale.

  6. What type of media do you use in the tanks?

Our Whole House Water Filters use an NSF certified AquaSorb HS acid washed coconut shell carbon by Jacobi, the leader in carbon media. AquaSorb® HS is an acid washed high purity high activity granular activated carbon manufactured by steam activation from carefully select coconut shells. This activated carbon is produced for use in ultra-pure water treatment systems requiring low conductivity and exceptionally high purity. This activated carbon is also specifically designed for the removal of heavy hydrocarbons from recovered condensate. The acid washing process removes soluble silica from the matrix of the activated carbon to prevent leaching into the condensate.

Our Salt free water softeners use template assisted crystalization to treat hard water. TAC has been tested by Arizona State University and found to be the most promising technology with scale reductions over 90%.

  7. How often do the media need to be replaced?

The carbon media comes with a 5 year or 1,000,000 gallon guarantee. We guarantee the carbon reducing chlorine to undetectable levels for that period. When the carbon media needs to be replaced simply, order a replacement bag of carbon, dump out the expired media and refill the tanks with new media. The salt free softener media generally does not need to be replaced.

  8. How often do the sediment pre filters need to be changed?

The string wound sediment pre filters (big blue housing) needs to be replaced every 8-10 months.

  9. Is there a reduction in water pressure?

No. Our systems do not change or drop the water pressure once installed.

  10. Who installs the systems?

Anyone with basic plumbing skills can easily install our systems. If you do not have or know someone with basic plumbing, any local plumber will have no problem with installation. If you need help finding a plumber contact our support and we can have a few local companies give you free quotes.

  11. What does the lifetime warranty cover?

Our lifetime warranty covers the tanks and valves against manufacturer's defect. Warranties are voided if improperly used or improper installation. Please read all manuals and instructions prior to use.

  12. How do I know if I need the Whole House Carbon Filter or the Whole House Filter/Softener Combo?

The carbon filter is perfect for residences that do not have excessive limescale buildup or if it is not a nuisance. If you do have hard water and would like to reduce the effect of lime scaling then the Filter/Softener Combo is the better option.

  13. How are the filters reusable?

Every filter comes with a lifetime warranty on the tanks and valves. After the filtering media expires you simply disconnect the system and exchange it with new media. It is a simple enough task homeowners can do in 35 minutes. So the filters are virtually reusable time after time. There are no electrical hookups or high power backwashing, so essentially there is nothing that can go out or break. The high spun fiberglass tanks are so strong and resistant that there should be no reason it won’t last for your grandchildren.

  14. Where are the systems installed?

The whole house water systems are installed on the main water line at the point of entry. The point of entry (POE) differs from house to house but is usually either in the garage or outside by the water shut off valve.

  15. Can the systems be installed outside?

Yes. The systems can be installed inside or outside the home as long as temperatures don’t reach below zero for extend periods of time(days).

  16. Are the systems certified?

Most all of our parts carry the NSF certified mark. See Literature tab for each individual part that is certified. AquaSorb HS acid washed coconut shell carbon by jacobi is also NSF certified.

  17. How do you ship the systems?

We offer free UPS ground shipping in the continental U.S. The systems come pre filled with media, ready to be installed. We ship from our warehouse within 1-3 business days.

  18. What is the return policy?

We offer a try it or love it 90 day full refund, or your money back. Click Here to see our shipping and return page.
